Are You Using Your Skincare Products in the Right Order?
Great skin is not simply a matter of DNA. Your daily habits, in fact, have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. But depending on which product reviews you read or doctors you consult, there are a dizzying number of opinions on everything from how to moisturize to how to protect yourself from UV rays. Ultimately, caring for your skin is simply personal.
So you've discovered products that work for your skin! Now, it's time to figure out how to layer them to build a skincare routine that gives the best results.
Step 1: Remove Makeup
We should put as much care into removing makeup as we do into putting it on. Remove makeup with a classic makeup remover, cleansing wipes, or cleansing oil.
Little known fact: Cleansing oils dissolve impurities on the skin without drying it out, making them a great alternative for those with dry, sensitive skin, and to reduce the drying effects of aging.
Step 2: Cleanse
Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any routine. Your facial wash or cleanser is the foundation of your entire regimen. It will determine how well your products will work for your skin because it creates a clean canvas for all your potions to be absorbed into.
Step 3: Exfoliate
Twice a week use a gentle enzyme or bead-based exfoliator to remove the dead skin cells that can make the complexion appear lack-luster, block pores, and prevent key product ingredient absorption.
Step 4: Apply Toner
It refines pores and removes deep-seated dirt that your cleanser wasn't able to reach. It is usually applied with a cotton ball or pad.
Step 5: Apply Serum
Because it's made up of smaller molecules, it delivers potent and powerful ingredients deep into your skin. It's best for targeting specific skin concerns like dryness, anti-aging, or acne. A good rule of thumb is to apply formulas with thinner consistencies first, and then apply thicker treatments over them (for example, a watery essence works best layered under a more syrupy serum).
Step 6: Apply Moisturizer
Almost done! Smooth on a moisturizer (like Earth's Daughter organic aloe vera gel) or night cream to give your skin a big drink of water - hydrated skin equals happy skin. Aside from nourishing and hydrating your complexion, a moisturizer helps seal in all the products on your face to help it repair itself overnight.
Pro tip: For an extra shot of hydration, pat a facial oil on top of your moisturizer to seal it in.
Step 7: Apply Eye Cream
The under-eye area is the most delicate part of our complexions and the first to show signs of aging which is why it deserves its own special step in your routine. Gently tap on eye serum (like Earth's Daughter eye serum) with your ring finger to keep the area smooth and bright.
Step 8: Apply SPF
It may be the last step, but it's arguably the most important one. Applying sunscreen shouldn't be reserved for the summer holidays. Protecting the skin on a daily basis from UV rays will avoid the development of dark spots, wrinkles, and fine lines.
Remember: Daily use can reduce the appearance of skin aging by 24%, making it one of the very best anti-aging treatments around.
